In May, at the New England Federal Credit Union (NEFCU) Shred Event, the line of people waiting to have their paper shredded wrapped around the parking lot and out into the street. The participants brought enough confidential paper to shred to fill over 3 SecurShred shredding trucks. The SecurShred mobile shredding trucks hold approximately 10,000 lbs (5 tons) of paper. That means we shredded over 30,000 lbs (15 tons) of paper. The participants saved over 200 trees by shredding the paper because all of the paper is recycled.
Every year, SecurShred hosts shredding events throughout Vermont and New York, helping hundreds of households securely and responsibly recycle their paper documents. By supporting our local communities, we are able to prevent identity theft, increase public awareness of document security, and help reduce the amount of recyclable paper that is going into the waste stream.
Did you know:
According to The Public Recycling Officials of Pennsylvania, resources are conserved when paper is recycled. For every ton of paper that is recycled, the following are saved:
- 17 trees
- 275 pounds of sulfur
- 350 pounds of limestone
- 9,000 pounds of steam
- 60,000 gallons of water
- 225 kilowatt hours
- 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space
Paper, which includes everything from packaging to mail, makes up the largest percentage of the municipal solid waste stream at 33 percent. It’s also one of the most recovered materials (Source:http://earth911.com/recycling/paper/).
