SecurShred Gift Exchange

FREE shredding when you bring in a toy
Howard Center Gifts for Chittenden County Children

The gift giving season is upon us again! To celebrate the season we are having a gift exchange. Bring in a toy in exchange for free shredding. The toy should be for any child ages infant to 11. In exchange of your gift for any child, we will shred your documents at no charge. The gifts will be presented to needy children in the Chittenden County area. Give a little and get the joy of knowing you have helped bring the magic of Christmas to a child and the comfort of having your information destroyed properly.

This time of year SecurShred employees bustle about shopping for those in need.  Every year we "adopt" several families that would otherwise go without during the holiday season.  From infant to age 11, we help buy everything on their wish list and then some.

Our "adopted" families are supplied to us by The Howard Center in Burlington, Vermont. They are a not for profit agency that serves residents of Chittenden County as well as other areas of Vermont.

We appreciate your help with giving the gift of Christmas this year.  Please contact us should you have any questions or would like to get a specific item on one of the wish lists.

During Holiday Season Beware Of Identity Theft

The perfect time to steal someones identity

Crowded Shopping Mall During The HolidaysHolidays should be a time filled with family, friends, good food and the joy of giving. Unfortunately for some it is also the best time to have their identity stolen.  According to the Federal Trade Commission someone has their identity stolen every 3.2 seconds.

SecurShred has put together a small list of things to watch out for this holiday season.

Cellphones and Mobile Devices
Take care of your items when you are shopping. Crowded stores and malls are the perfect place for someone to lose their cell phone or mobile device. With the hustle and bustle around you it is easy to become side tracked or over whelmed with the crowds. Put your phone away until you are done shopping or away from people. It is very easy to put your phone down while you are shopping to pick up a last minute item, leave it in a dressing room or at a register while checking out. Make sure your phone is password protected. Password protecting your phone can be a deterrent to a thief. Sometimes just having that one extra step on your phone or mobile device is the key to stopping a thief from stealing your identity and phone's data

Cyber Threat Not Number One Method of Identity Theft

By: Mark E. Ruquet, Propertycasualty360.com

Top Known Causes Of Identity FraudMuch attention is paid to the theft of personal information over the Internet, but the number-one cause for identity theft turns out to be old-fashioned loss of personal effects, according to Travelers.

A study released by the insurer says that in this era of digital information, 73 percent of cases of identity fraud result from burglary, stolen wallets and pilfered identifications. The study is based on Travelers claim data.

Travelers says "stolen or misplaced items, such as wallets and pocketbooks, accounted for the most common known causes for identity fraud."

In second place was a stolen or compromised license, Social Security card or other form of personal identification.

Burglaries ranked third, followed by cyber breaches, including Internet scams and old-fashioned forgeries.
