What happens to your paper after it is shredded?

By JoEllen Barton, SecurShred. March 2013

So you know you need to destroy your personal and confidential information, but once that is done do you know where that material is going afterward? That is after all, just as important as the actual act of shredding the paper documents.

Preventing Identity TheftAnyone can shred paper, either by purchasing an expensive shredding machine (which makes a huge mess) or hiring a non-NAID Certified shredding company. Though this is a good way to handle your paper, better than just recycling it or throwing it away, it is simply not the best way. Anyone with time and energy can reconstruct long strips of paper that come from using a conventional shredder. Non-NAID Certified companies do not have to comply with regulated standards and can simply dump their shredded paper at any waste district for disposal.  Though time consuming, desperate people will take the time and make the effort to re-create these confidential documents. This is why NAID, the National Association for Information Destruction, was created. It is the first and foremost trusted organization created to set strict standards for Information Destruction companies.

We know there are many great reasons why you choose SecurShred to handle your document destruction. Maybe it’s because we are NAID certified, have a securely monitored facility, could be the ease of our state-of-the-art mobile fleet shredding at your location, or the due diligence of protecting yourself from identity theft. Whatever the reason(s), we want to assure you that you are making the right choice by selecting our NAID certified company to handle your confidential material.

SecurShred’s mobile state-of-the-art trucks can shred on-site at your location. These trucks are equipped with a pierce and tear shredding machine that eats paper, staples, bull clips, just about anything we feed it. The shredded material is fed into the locked backend of the truck by way of an auger system. All the paper mixes together as the driver shreds documents at each service location throughout the day. The trucks are able to shred/store up to 10,000 lbs of paper. The back/storage compartment of our trucks, remain locked until they are ready for emptying at the end of the day. At the end of the day the nickel sized pieces are brought back to SecurShred’s secure facility where it is baled into 1,100 to 1,400 lb paper bales. All bales are weighed and stowed onto a secured trailer for transport to a local paper mill. Once on-site at the paper mill the trailer is kept locked, under full surveillance and guard watch until it is brought into the facility for processing. Each shipment has a documented chain of custody, from our facility to the paper mill.  Once unloaded at the mill, the paper is broken down in a process that removes all the metals and contaminants such as plastic and cardboard before it is recycled into tissue paper. The paper mill uses a local distribution company that sells the recycled tissue products back into our local main stream. Who knows, you may already be using the paper you and/or your company had us destroy and recycle. Good for you and better for our environment.

NAID Certified or NAID Member?
NAID Certified is not the same as being a member of NAID. Anyone can become a Member of NAID just like anyone can become a member the local Chamber of Commerce. NAID Certification is a lengthy rigorous process that sets a rigid standard for Information Companies to comply by. Companies have to be audited on an annual basis as well as undergo unannounced facility audits throughout the year along with list of compliance regulations that must be thoroughly documented and diligently followed. We take this certification very seriously. Make sure to look for the AAA Certified Logo to be sure your information will be handled properly. SecurShred has proudly been a NAID Certified company since 2001.
