In late July, 62 colleges were hacked for the Ellucian Banner Web flaw.  This module is used by colleges to customize their web applications affecting users logging in. While this vulnerability is still being worked on, we thought you might appreciate some tips on improving your college security.

Ask – If you’re inputting sensitive info (like your financing, social security number,) ask your college about these vulnerabilities to see if they’re affected and what they’re doing about it.

Passwords – Do NOT use the same password over and over. Use complex passwords.

USB thumb drives – If you see one on the ground? DON’T PICK IT UP! A study was done with researchers dropping nearly 300 USB sticks on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus and they measured who plugged in the drives. Of the drives dropped, 98% were picked up and for 45% of the drives, someone not only plugged in the drive but also clicked on files.
