HDD vs SSD

By in

There’s some confusion over the difference between HDD – Hard Disk Drives and SSD – Solid State Drives. What’s the right system for your data needs? While SSDs may look far more attractive over the HDD, there are some advantages to your older hard drive:

HDD UPSIDE:

  • Cheaper per gigabyte than solid state drives (as low as 3 cents per gigabyte.)

HDD DOWNSIDE:

  • power hungry
  • noisy
  • produce heat
  • slower than SSDs
  • moving parts that can break over time

SSD – Solid State Drives

SSDs are standard in your MacBook and Apple’s laptop line, you can find SSD in most smart devices. Unlike an HDD, SSDs have no moving parts so instead of using disks, motors and read/write heads, SSDs use flash memory instead. These computer chips retain your information even when the power’s off.

SSD UPSIDE

  • Faster to start up
  • Smaller, thinner, lighter
  • Last longer on a single battery charge.

SSD DOWNSIDE

  • Costs over twice as much as HDD for the same storage space

SSD drive manufacturers are also looking into ways of storing more data into smaller form factors (some as small as a piece of chocolate!)and achieving greater speeds than your HDD.
